Why Sheep Have Short Legs

Preface

            An appropriate subtitle for this book might be "Lessons I Have Learned from Trying to Be and Do Without Divine Appointment and Enablement."  We short-legged sheep try to jump into places God never ordained for us to jump. When we do, we find hurts and disillusionments we didn't bargain for and they place upon us heavy weights called cynicism and bitterness.

            We also frustrate ourselves silly jumping to conclusions which short-legged sheep have not been authorized to jump to. My desire is to write about things that I would talk to you about if we were to sit down together and share thoughts on learning to obediently follow the Good Shepherd.

            I have learned that institutions and programs do not heal the hurts and pains of humanity. In fact, they can sometimes add compound fracture. I have learned, as a recipient, that compassionate ministry - ministry that isn't afraid of questions, nor tears that begin down deep inside the heart and is not afraid of searching hearts and minds - is a balm that soothes and heals the hurting. There are compassionate ministries and Holy Spirit giftings God will  use to soothe away the callousness of cynicism and the anger in bitterness.

            As a youth, God touched my heart with a call to full-time ministry. He also instilled a special burden for that ministry - a compassionate concern for the person who sits on the church bench. Those persons are there year after year through ups and downs, through disillusionment and deliverance, often spending more time down in the valley of disillusionment than up on the mountain of deliverance. I have written with those persons in mind.

After being out of the ministry for several years (having traveled in ministry for over twenty years, working on church staffs for nine, and pastoring for two) and relationally walking out restoration, I was able to identify with those on the bench. I also spent nine years working in a paint and body shop and three helping start a new church. Through all of it I came to experience the result of unwisely jumping, short legs and all, into races and places God did not authorize me to jump. I have discovered that sheep were not made for highbred racing nor for high jumping. They were made to follow the Good Shepherd…. one step at a time.

When God allows us to see what is going on in His bigger picture, we begin to realize how limited the view is from our little world what we call “normal.” Visions shake and quake right through our “reality,” but what we do with the after-shocks of that quake is up to us.
