Are Psychics for Real or Con-artists?

Growing up on the church bench I was inclined to believe that psychic phenomena was an elaborate hoax and there was no power in such works of darkness. However, the answer to the question in reality is . . . “both.” While nothing was ever created in hell and never will be, hell is adept at misusing God’s stuff. A psychic is hell’s version of a prophetic gift, granting insight by supernatural means. So a genuine psychic can tap into supernatural abilities by allying with powers of darkness. The con-artist psychic can operate through trickery such as reading people’s body language, verbiage or tone or by relying upon demographics or research, etc.

Psychic phenomena is bombarding the media as the theme of movies, television shows, games and advertisements. As believers we need God’s wisdom and insight to confront the onslaught. Marty had a dream recently that I believe was a word of wisdom for this hour. In the dream a demented girl, about sixteen years old, was in a group of people telling them the bumpers on a car had told her the devil was going to do something awful. She got the people around her stirred up and fearful. Marty had prayed for her and told her the threat was under the blood of Jesus. She said, “But those bumpers really did tell me that.” Marty said, “Yes. I know. But where is it now?” He led her into a declaration that it was all under blood now. However, enjoying the attention of those around her and liking the power of being able to get a reaction from them, she told the phenomenon of the talking bumpers again and stirred up the threat again. Marty again confronted them by asking, “But where is it now?”

If she and the hearers around them had continued to rehearse and fear the threat, they would actually prepare a runway for landing the threat in their lives. That is the power of the principle of agreement. Marty was lifting them above their fear with the truth. The same agreement principle directed by truth would knock the threat out of the air before it could land.

A word of wisdom gives us practical insight or instruction. The word of wisdom in this dream concerns confrontations with works and workers of darkness: 1) Don’t waste time denying phenomenon or that there is power in darkness, but don’t agree with it. Instead, 2) agree with the Truth. Marty did not deny or try to convince her she had not heard a message from the bumpers. He did not waste time denying the possible phenomenon or the power of darkness, he simply declared the higher power, the Almighty God and His blood covenant that would prevail over the future.

For too long the church and others have spent their efforts denying there is power in darkness. How many generations have been distracted from purpose by trying to prove there is no such thing as a ghost or trying to logically explain away supernatural displays. We never get to the point if we spend our time answering the wrong questions. Rather than arguing about ghosts, we need to know if we are AFRAID of them! When our children tell us there are monsters under their bed our reply should be, ‘Do you know he has no authority to be there?’

Phenomenon and supernatural incidents simply give testimony that there is a spiritual realm, beyond this natural dimension. If we convince people they did not see what they saw or did not feel what they felt we have only built a fire of self-doubt. The enemy will take advantage of that and question everything they think, confusing them until they even burn the Truth of God in that fire of self-doubt.

Wisdom does not deny the power of darkness. Wisdom declares our God is more powerful. He is the Lord Almighty in every realm and HE will prevail. Is it possible the girl was making up the whole thing? Yes, people can go to manipulative extremes because they want attention or power over others. Is it possible she was truly convinced the bumpers spoke but they had not? Yes, the human mind is very powerful. After all, we were created in the image of God. The human imagination can create and produce extreme feats and is capable of unbelievable deception of self and others. However, we must realize also that the human mind did not create all the forces that are at work in the spirit realm.

Super - natural means “beyond the natural.” Beyond the natural is the spirit realm. There is only one spirit realm. John 4:24 says that God is a spirit. To speak of the spirit realm is to allude to His dwelling place. That should give us some clue to its characteristics and vastness and uniqueness. The spirit realm permeates and overlays the natural realm, though unseen. It is at the edge of the natural realm where natural ends and spirit begins. It is not limited by the same barriers, not contained in the same dimensions of length, width, height and time. Neither are its members or activities limited in direction or time. The spirit realm includes (though not limited to) the air and atmosphere around us. There are both legal and illegal activities going on in that realm. Ephesians 2:2 indicates Satan (prince of the power of the air) operates in the air, indicating his minions are located in the atmosphere. From there they can and do affect weather and stay poised to affect man, given the opportunity. Of course, angels also are poised in the air and atmosphere to affect the lives of humans. [Note also that Satan is only a prince. He is not a king or all powerful lord of even that realm. He is simply the ruler of his minions that operate in that realm with him.]

In Genesis one, God gave man dominion over the natural realm, the earth itself and every living thing (plant and animal). The spirit realm can only have success in the earth through human agreement, (passive or active). So, supernatural or spirit realm beings can only do what those in dominion allow them or give them the opportunity to do. Through choices and decisions of men the natural realm is opened to spirit realm forces. Some doors were opened in previous generations and are never questioned. The conditions they allowed have become NORMAL to the human race or a region or a culture or a family. [Of course, once a door is opened in any generation, forces of evil will continue until agreement counteracts by binding, expelling and shutting that door.]

So, can people tap into the supernatural? The real question is: Can people choose to submit themselves to spirit beings and be under their influence? YES, knowingly and unknowingly. A genuine psychic has a door open to demons. This legal access into their minds and lives is opened through either their own choices and lifestyle or a previous generation’s choices and lifestyle. Often people born with a prophetic motivational gift who are discerning and perceptive will be exploited by hell if their lives are not submitted to God. Their natural “bent” makes them prime targets to be lured into works of darkness.

Practitioners of the dark arts are usually on personal or private quests. Many start out looking for control to combat their own fears. Whether by slight of the hand trickery or by covenanting with darkness, they develop techniques of interpreting nature (like weather, animals, stars, etc.), to predict the future. They learn to manipulate the natural hoping to influence the supernatural. They learn incantations to release their agreement with powers of darkness. Many seek knowledge and spiritual connections to have influence over other people, ultimately hoping to be powerful or wealthy. Ever since the serpent in the garden, hell has offered humans control and promised empowerment. The devil’s intention in any alliance is to gain use of the dominion God gave man. And in all his promises and bait he never reveals the ultimate consequences of the deal he’s offering. Neither will he reveal the limitations of his power or the nature of his minions up front. Demons can take a person past natural knowledge, but they are not all-knowing. Demons are under no obligation to be truthful and they are never ‘helpful.’ They are maneuvering for opportunities to steal, kill and destroy (Jn 10:10). Demons are selfish and competitive. There is no loyalty or benevolence, just vying for booty. They will work against each other or their human agent whenever opportune. The human agent for darkness is totally deceived if he or she believes the powers of darkness will be loyal or trustworthy. No matter how humanely and beneficently packaged, powers of darkness will always be deceptive and ultimately abusive. And those human agents who ally with darkness will ultimately face the hidden but costly consequences of betrayal.

There are those who will defend their practices declaring themselves “white witches” or compassionate defenders and helpers of the helpless. This is the same bill of goods the serpent sold Adam and Eve in the garden: you will be able to discern good and evil and know just how to deal with it. You will be just like God, without being submitted to Him. The bottom line is that no matter how good human intentions are, outside the Spirit of Christ Jesus they oppose His Lordship and ultimately defile lives. The excellence and skill of the human ability without Christ boils down to worshiping the abilities of the created rather than the Creator.

How shall we counter the undeniable workers of darkness in our generation? We shall walk in the wisdom and authority of God, fully convinced, fully equipped.
